Today I’d like to bring to your attention a new drum book written by Steve Forster, called 143 Binary Algorhythms Applied To Paradiddles.
Steve was a student of jazz drumming great, Joe Morello. Along with his fabulous performances with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Morello was widely respected as a drum teacher and author. Some of Joe’s other former students include Danny Gottlieb, Max Weinberg, and Jon Fishman.
In the intro of Steve’s new book, he describes some of his experiences studying with Morello. Joe Morello had very poor vision since birth, and therefore had a very difficult time writing. Because of this, Steve was given the task of transcribing the ideas for Joe’s famous book, Master Studies. He says he learned a great deal about Morello’s thinking in the process.
Start with the drumstick in your hand in French Grip, with the stick's center of gravity just above the index finger. If you're unsure what the French Grip looks like: Thumb on top of stick, running parallel; Weight of stick rests on your second knuckle of the middle and index finger. Wrist and fingers are firm but relaxed.
One of the books Joe used most with his students was Stick Control For The Snare Drummer by George Lawrence Stone. Morello expanded on Stone’s book in endless ways with his students, applying the exercises to the drum-set, adding accents and much more. Many of these became the material for his books Master Studies and Master Studies II.
- Single stroke roll is probably the most common drum technique that you’ll use. It’s often used in beats, fills, and even drum solos. This is an essential technique to learn. Rebound Stroke. This stroke consists of a down stroke and an up stroke. The upstroke is produced when the drum stick bounces off the drums. The point of learning.
- Advanced Rudiment Technique - Some Simple Rudiments at Much Higher Speeds! SECTION 4 - THE DRUM KIT Setting Up a Drum Kit for More Speed & Control. Efficient Movement Around The Drums -Positioning the arms -70.Linear Movement VS Independence.Sticking Patterns & Rudiments. Technique for the Feet.
Steve goes on to explain that many other ideas based on the Stick Control exercises that he and other students of Joe Morello used were never written down. Steve’s book 143 Binary Algorhythms Applied To Paradiddles presents some of these ideas in written form for the first time.
Steve also says the examples in the book will enable the reader to create thousands of interesting and useful exercises of their own.

The book also contains a unique set of 43 exercises based on the well know snare drum rhythm from Ravel’s Bolero. These exercises are helpful in developing control as well as becoming accustomed to a variety of different stickings within a constrained rhythmic format.
